Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) has completed the addition of Spotify to its game consoles – PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3. The company had earlier announced that it was ending its native music service for PS known as Music Unlimited and instead partnering with Spotify to enhance the entertainment of the consoles. The more than 60 million Spotify users can now log into their accounts from Sony’s consoles to stream music.
Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) attempted to boost the entertainment capability of its PS consoles with Music Unlimited streaming but couldn’t go far. It discontinued the service and looked around for a better option and found Spotify, one of the largest streaming music providers.
Integration Spotify into PS means that from today Spotify users has another new way to stream music from the platform. One of the key things to note in the deal between Sony and Spotify is that it is an exclusive one, which simply means that it Spotify cannot partner with Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) for a similar service for Xbox One.
Billed through PlayStation account
It is easy to get started with Spotify on PS consoles. When you launch the Spotify app on either PS4 or PS3 for the first time, you will be greeted by a sign up or log in screen. If you are an existing Spotify user, you can log in with your credentials or log in through Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB). You can also log in using Spotify’s mobile app known as Spotify Connect, which is available for tablet or smartphone users. If you are not already signed up with Spotify, you will need to create an account, which will be billed straight through your PlayStation account. Once connected, you cans start streaming Spotify music on your console.
The integration of Spotify on PlayStation is done in such a manner that you are able to stream music on the background as you play your favorite game. However, if you run into sound confusion with the in-game music and your Spotify music, you can access the menu to adjust the volume.
Enhancing the value of PlayStation
The addition of Spotify is yet another significant move by Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) to bring more value to console users beyond playing games. The company also recently introduced streaming TV service known as PlayStation Vue.
