Cable giant, Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:CMCSA) announced the rolling out of a new broadband service with speeds of up to 2Gbps. The service is forecasted to be faster than Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Fiber.

The company plans on introducing this service to homes in America starting from May 2015. However, no official word has gotten out about the pricing of this package. But considering that the service will be offered with speeds that high, it will obviously not be cheap.
One of the extra perks of this service is the fact that it will be symmetrical. This will give the subscribers upload speeds that are just as fast as download speeds.
Comcast’s decision to venture into multi-gigabyte home service is a bit of a shock. This is because the company had described similar efforts by Google fiber as too extreme and excessive. However, that was years ago, and situations have changed, with the home internet requirements growing more and more.
This service will come as a welcome relief to heavy internet users working from home. Heavy online gamers will love this package. In short, any internet junkie who is willing to pay an extra buck will reap a lot of benefit from the service.
As exciting as all this sounds, there are some downsides. Connection to this service will require the installation of expensive professional grade equipment. It will also require one to live in proximity with the company’s fiber network.
Though this package will be new to homes, Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:CMCSA) has already been supplying the multi-gigabyte internet service to businesses and companies. The company plans on initiating the home project in Atlanta and subsequently expanding it to other regions across the country.
Comcast intends to have coverage of over 18 million homes in America by the end of this year. Since it will be more challenging to avail the 2Gbps package to all its customers, the company is already working on a 1Gbps service similar to that of Google fiber. The package is expected to roll out in 2016 and is expected to reach as many customers as possible.
