QUALCOMM, Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM) has decided to join in the acquisition trend by buying into startup companies to join efforts that will focus on cybernetics or robotics in simpler terms.
QUALCOMM has been having tremendous success in the manufacture and sale of powerful smartphone chips. Now the company has decided to extend its operations into robotics. The tech firm plans to achieve this operation by coming up with a robotics accelerator division called TechStars. The latter will pull in about ten startup organizations that are oriented towards robotics. QUALCOMM will then integrate them into the project.
The robotics accelerator by QUALCOMM, Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM) is more like a mentorship program that will span up to 4 months. The program will take place in a well-stocked robotics lab that spans over 7,000 square feet. This large expanse will give them room to work collaboratively to bring resources together and come up with something profound as expected.
The officials from the parent firm believe that bringing the firms together is a clever move because it will pull the resources together including great ideas from the engineers. This will increase the chances of success. According to Houman Haghighi, the head of the robotics accelerator, robotics has three divisions; mechanical components, autonomous nature and the software composition.
The robotics accelerator must exploit the three components to make sure the project is fully optimized. So far, three of the ten companies assimilated in the program are focused on drone technology. In the past five years, drones have been seen as viable options for multiple utilities such as crop dusting, recreational activities and of course they have had much more exposure in military reconnaissance.
Amazon has a project where it considers introducing a product delivery service using drones. Apart from drone technology, the companies will exploit other useful robotics. As gaming gains universal attention, the companies will also focus on new gaming innovations, especially in augmented reality.
Before the project comes to an end on September 29, the companies are expected to have come up with some useful technology that will then be assimilated into the market.
